another instrument review for you
as always the written review is on the

is an instrument that I see probably get
recommended to begin as more than any
other you know the sort of thing you’re
on a forum or discussion group and
somebody asks the question that I’m
getting a new ukulele or my first
ukulele recommend me want somebody on an
almost daily basis will recommend one
from this brand which is a lunar and
this is a concert scale they’re tattoo
laser tattoo edged concert scale from
Luna it gets a lot of high praise or is
there a lot of people who just happen to
have them and like to make a
recommendation I thought I’d buy one and
find out it is a fairly standard ukulele
shape in the concert scale as I say made
completely from laminate wood with a
mahogany outer double bed shape pretty
plain flat back as I said not solid wood
laminate wood pretty plain sides no edge
binding so you can see the edges of the
laminate but it’s on the top which is
where I think people really get
attracted to when they go into a music
store and see it on the shelf yeah
this laser etched tattoo design that
you’ve gone here it’s um you’re either
going to love it or hate it I don’t know
but other than that yeah I mean it’s
it’s alright it’s you can actually you
know you can feel it it’s smaller
transfer fairly standard tie bar bridge
there with a bit of odd shaping to it
screwed in place as given away by these
two holes and a plastic saddle
uncompensated it’s pretty well made
looking inside lots of glue spots and
shavings the bracing looks quite chunky
but the laminate is fairly thin so
all right fairly standard neck hardwood
mahogany I think with the join here and
we joined up at the top fairly standard
neck profile plastic nut Nichols of
frets with no sharp edges the edges are
unbound you’ve got these triangle shaped
inlaid plastic triangle fret markers no
side fret markers the rosewood looks dry
it looks cheap
it looks pale in the middle here I don’t
know whether I can show you this but
I’ve also got sort of wood knots and
holes in it looks like woodworm I think
that’s awful knowing it’s just cheap
wood with poor quality control that
would annoy the hell out of me
thankfully a different shaped headstock
there with the Luna logo that is
screen-printed on in white I think it
looks a bit stark but there we go
faced in Marga new veneer and on the
back we have unbranded open geared
tuners that you see almost cheap
ukuleles but these are really terrible
look at that I found when I was tuning
it there was a lot of play in them and
kind of a rattle they all move I reckon
if I yank these I could probably pull
them out not good
Queen of strings and 480 pounds and you
get this and you get this very
functional gig bag so priced for the
beginner who I think as I say probably
gets attracted by what’s going on on top
here but that doesn’t make any sound
it’s how it plays that matters
fairly balanced fairly light a little
bit body heavy I think but it’s it’s
alright it’s the sound I mean it’s
functional it plays you Tunes the setups
okay the intonation isn’t bad it just
doesn’t have a lot of life to it now I
know it’s a cheap ukulele but I’ve
played other cheap ukuleles of this 80
quid price point that I’ve got a lot
more life to them seems a bit
one-dimensional to me it’s not got huge
amounts of volume it hasn’t got huge
amounts of sustained
you know what I thought about this one
was you know if this was fifty quid or
thirty quid ukulele I’d be thinking well
that sound is what I expected from it
it’s not it’s 80s so it’s a bit more and
I just wonder how much more you are
paying because of this stuff I
personally wouldn’t spend my money on it
or recommend it I think you can do
better things like Baton Rouge we’re
just a plain laminate from makalah has
more life in it than this one I’m not
expecting great things from you clearly
at this price point I just I just think
you can do better if you go plainer I
don’t know what it is lunar I think it’s
probably ever built inside I think the
laminates cheap I don’t like the
roughness of the neck and those tuners
but it it’s perfectly functional you
know I’ll get a lot of bad press for
this video because course and ukulele
around if you say anything bad a bit
about a ukulele you are the devil I just
like to try and sort of tell it like it
is it’s one guy’s impartial review I
think you can do better than buying this
plenty of people will because they’ll
like this I would ignore that and get
something plainer that the sounds a bit
better you may be listening to the video
and thinking what sounds alright to me
I suppose it does

I rarely purchase musical instruments online. When I’ve done that, I’ve had a mixed bag of results. One of the guitars I purchased online snapped in half the first time I tuned it. As a result, I am extremely reluctant to purchase musical instruments without first holding them in my possession. But my wife has always wanted to learn to play the ukulele, and she adores the ocean. I thought this would be a unique gift for her birthday. I knew that this was the uke for her as soon as I saw it here, but I couldn’t find it in any local stores. I still haven’t found a Luna dealer in my area. So I reluctantly purchased it. I wish you could have seen the look on her face as I handed it to her! I caused her to weep (a good thing).
The ukelele arrived on time and in good condition. It was in a shipping box with appropriate packaging, as well as a Luna box. It included a gig pack. The real uke is stunning! The collar and back are a lovely dark blue, and the drawn artwork on the front is superb. The woodwork is very well finished, and all joints and seams are perfectly aligned. The movement is well positioned, and the neck is nice and straight. The uke needed no setup apart from tuning right out of the box. The only flaw with this uke was that some glue had gotten into a few tiny crevices and had been painted over. These locations are not apparent unless you are explicitly searching for them. It’s a minor flaw that has no bearing on the tone or playability of this ukulele. This is a concert uke, which is bigger than most ukeleles. It is, in my opinion, 25% larger. As a result, it is slightly quieter and has a slightly lower pitch than other small ones. Even if you haven’t picked it up in a few days, it stays in tune very well, with only minor adjustments needed. The strings are made by Aquilla, which is one of the best brands available. Good strings are critical for keeping an instrument in tune, ease of play, and overall sound.
My wife has had a lot of fun learning to play the ukelele. It was the ideal one for her to begin with, and I enjoy playing it as well. I don’t own a more expensive one, but I have played a lot of them in the past. This performs as well as or better than models costing $300-400. This instrument has exceeded our expectations.
The first thing you note about this uke is that it is LOUD! has more volume than my tenor, which I felt had adequate volume. The small concert simply resonates far larger than its duration. It has a decent midrange and a long sustain. Uke arrived at Austin Bazaar fully prepared. Intonation was fine right out of the gate. Ukuleles are also light and well balanced.
There are a few problems with quality management. Glue can be seen on the fret board just below the nut. Any pitted wood on the top edge. And the fret board finish is mediocre. The fret edges hang a little over the fret board; they’re not sharp, but I could file them down. Minor cosmetic issues, none of which affect gameplay.
The hard case is useful. It’s made of canvas and has a wide pocket on the outside. Pocket appears to be upside down to me, but maybe I will learn to like it? There are a lot of hooks on the outside, and a strap is included so you can shoulder it like a gig bag. There’s a small compartment on the inside for storing a tuner, capo, extra strings, or whatever you want. The interior is lined with a soft imitation black velvet. I’m quite pleased with the situation, and the fact that it came with it made this a GREAT DEAL. It also includes a cloth, a DVD, and an Eno ET-33 tuner.
With its turtle tattoos and good-looking wood, this is a cute Uke. The off-white/tan nut and saddle are a nice touch. Luna’s other tattoo concerts have been more understated.
The most important aspect of my review is that this is a lovely, well-made ukulele with a rich, full tone. There is no buzzing of the strings and no “plinky” ukulele tone. The finish is exquisitely designed, and the tattoo style is stunning. The pictures don’t do the warm mahogany tones justice, so you’ll have to see it in person. My niece owns many ukuleles, including this one, which she considers to be her favorite. She adores it, so I purchased one after reading every review. Pay for the extra box if you’re thinking about buying this or some other breakable item! There was a large tear in the Luna box they sent in when my mail carrier delivered it. Fortunately, no harm was done to the instrument. In addition, some reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with the free gift bag that was included. The gig bag DOES have padding on the front, back, and along the sides (duh, it’s free). I’m getting another case, but this one is much superior to the one that came with my first uke, and it has an outside zipper pocket that is 7″x9″, large enough for a snack. I could go on and on about this lovely instrument, but I’d rather be playing it right now.
