  1. Excellent subwoofer. I’ve had a Pioneer 8in subwoofer for years and thought it performed admirably. It was a down firing sub that sounded fantastic when positioned in the sweet spot. There was enough port noise to make you insane at times.

Now, I offer the background because I couldn’t really find a strong link of what I had and what would be an improvement. There is a significant gap between 8in and 12in. First and foremost, consider the size and weight. Far larger and heavier. Deeper lows and a cleaner overall tone. In this case, the sound is much cleaner.

For music, I enjoy bass music. Hip hop, dnb, party music, and everything with a good rhythm. This thing will spit out the bass. You can sense it. When I read that people can feel the bass, I always think to myself, “Yeah, I can feel my bass too.” This is incorrect. This causes a slight vibration in your chest. My theater is about 12×19 in size and is located in the basement. This thing was causing the walls to tremble. Things were trembling upstairs. Port noise was less noticeable, but it was still there. This is fantastic for music.

Again, you can feel the bass in movies. However, I felt the need to lower the sub level while watching a movie. I’ve set the subwoofer level to halfway and the crossover frequency to about 80hz. I don’t like bass that’s louder than that. It is a matter of taste. However, it sounded fantastic and greatly improved my theater experience. However, it might be more than you want for movies. It’s fantastic for me. Rumbles rattled the sofa a little, and gun shots seemed to have life to them.

Overall, I was really impressed. Prior to making my purchase, I did some research on subwoofers and discovered that Polk was either adored or despised. I only have an older Pioneer sub to compare it to, but I can honestly tell this is a perfect sub upgrade for anyone looking to add some bass to their theater.

  2. Long story short, it was past time to replace my Yamaha HTR-5930 Home Theatre in a Box, which I purchased in 2006, particularly the dependable but aging subwoofer. Since upgrading to new Dayton AIR speakers and a Yamaha TSR-7810 from Costco, I want more “ooompfff” in my PS4 games and Blu-ray movies. Which left me with the option of upgrading the old and small Yamaha woofer to something nicer that didn’t break the bank and wouldn’t annoy my apt neighbors, so a woofer was simply not an option for my needs.

I spent WEEKS studying the Dayton woofers, Polk Audio woofers, and BIC woofers on different forums, and after nearly losing my mind, I concluded that the amount of positive feedback on the PSW505 indicated that a lot of people liked it, and that it was successful for a reason, despite all of the naysayers and haters on the AVS Forum.

When it arrived at my apartment building, I was completely taken aback; it was enormous in comparison to my little silver Yamaha woofer that I’d had for the previous 14 years! I couldn’t believe the size disparity! I can’t wait to link it and see what I’ve been missing all these years!

Yeah, this thing is going to shake my entire APT to the point that I’ll be evicted if I don’t turn it down! After some Yamaha calibration and level tweaking, my games sound absolutely incredible, and movies really BOOM and rattle. All the haters and naysayers who say this is a bad woofer and you need to pay more than $500 to get something decent are insane/stupid and have no business or right to offer advice to budget home theater enthusiasts. If you’re looking for some extra kick on your budget setup and can’t or won’t justify spending a lot of money for good boom, the PSW505 is a no-brainer, particularly for apt dwellers like me!

  3. The Polk Audio PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer sounded amazing for a while, but it didn’t last long. The subwoofer only lasted two months before short circuiting and burning out! I just used the subwoofer to add subtle dimension to the stereo, and I never played the music loudly. I didn’t even use the stereo every day, so I’m not sure why the subwoofer would have failed so soon. The subwoofer died with a deep and loud pop in the middle of a song, sending the cat fleeing the room. Following the pop, the subwoofer generated a distorted low octave static sound that clashed with the music playing on the stereo. The static sound was present even when no input was linked to the subwoofer! Within a few minutes, the metal plate on the back of the cabinet started to heat up to the point that it was dangerous to touch. I had to switch off the subwoofer because an electric burning smell was coming from the cabinet and filling the space. I believe the cabinet would have caught fire if I had left the subwoofer power on!
