Yamaha Acoustic Guitars Overview

greetings YouTube this is Chrismukkah
music Center in San Antonio Texas you
can find us
dot-com if you subscribe to our channel
or if you’ve been watching any of our
videos you know by now that we are big
fans of Yamaha acoustic guitars they
make good sounding easy to play quality
acoustic guitars at prices to meet any
budget basically they have what you’re
looking for in an acoustic guitar
quality price features aesthetics and
good playability so we’re really big
fans particularly with a lot of the
improvements they’ve been making across
their guitar line the last few years so
what we decided to do is put together a
video for you showing you some of the
guitars and the range of acoustics that
Yamaha makes and explain which guitars
would probably meet your needs best that
way you are more informed buyer and get
something that will bring you many years
of joy in playing for years to come so
without any further ado we’re gonna
start here with on the smallest guitars
in Yamahas lineup and that is this guy
in my lap this is a Yamaha apx 600 now
the apx body shape shouldn’t be anything
new it’s actually been around since the
late 80s and it was designed with a
particular thought in mind for the
electric guitarist who needs a good
stage the cousteau guitar something
that’s easy to play small and ready to
go
Dilton pick up cutaway good compact size
that they will be comfortable with when
they’re switching from their electric
guitar to an acoustic guitar
what Yamaha didn’t want to make was what
most electric guitarists had to deal
with at the time which was a big bodied
guitar that was a lot larger than their
electric guitar didn’t feel anything
like their electric guitar often had bad
action no pickup they’re having to go
through audio sound checks and install
pickup systems or just use a microphone
and feedback and all of that stuff so
from that idea was born the apx body
shape it’s a small scale guitar small
body size it’s thinner with a cutaway a
great setup and playability and a built
in pickup system now over the years it
has been refined to its current state
the a px 600 and this is a surprising
guitar and I mean that I’m going to talk
about the space
and you’ll you’ll understand what I mean
so it’s a small body it’s thin the 600
is a little little more depth than it
previously had it’s a spruce top with a
NATO back in sides body it’s all layered
construction or laminate so it’s not
solid wood on the top back or sides has
a cutaway nice NATO neck with a
comfortable feel short scale it’s 24 and
3/4 inch scale and a great pickup system
from Yamaha with their Paizo under
saddle pickup and preamp it has straight
braces so they’re not scalloped braces
and if I highlight some of those things
for you real quick
all laminate construction straight
braces in a small body thin design this
guitar should sound based upon those
specs if I’m just reading them on paper
thin it should sound great on stage but
acoustically it should sound thin and
the crazy thing about it is that it
doesn’t this sounds great it sounds
great plugged in and it sounds great
acoustically and at a price point
currently of $2.99 it’s really hard to
beat comes in a variety of colors you
can get in natural or oriental Bluebird
black and whatnot it’s it’s a really
stellar looking guitar that plays
fantastically and despite its specs that
will leave you leave you to believe that
it might sound like a thin stage only
guitar has great sustain good bass
response and nice volume it’s really
like I said a surprising guitar that is
very very comfortable on stage so if you
are a smaller stature or you are looking
for a stage friendly guitar that’ll also
work as a great couch guitar but
something that you can switch off from
electric to acoustic and play without
worry about if it’s going to sound good
if it’s going to feedback if it’s going
to feel right this is the guitar for you
and it’s really hard to be in this price
point so check out this play demo so you
can see what it sounds like
you
so this next guitar is new for 2018 this
is the new Yamaha CSS 1m it’s part of a
new line called the CSS line the 1m and
the 3m are both parlor sized guitars
which features solid spruce tops with
scalloped bracing the 1m features
laminate mahogany back and sides and the
3m features solid mahogany back and
sides they are both small diminutive
kind of parlor size guitars ideal for
travel or for someone who’s looking for
a small comfortable intimate guitar they
have a passive electronic ties a pickup
on it and they come with gig bags
basically they’re a shot across the bow
of the growing segment in the market for
travel sized guitars and it’s a lesson
in how to make a very affordable great
playing great sounding parlor size or
travel size guitar they feel great they
sound phenomenal really a very rich bass
response from this and it kind of looks
like as a cedar top it’s a vintage tint
comes in a variety of colors this one
happens to be my favorite and you know
if you’re looking for a guitar this
coming summer to go out camping with and
play around the campfire this is really
an ideal guitar if you’re looking for
something at home to be in the living
room or in your parlor as they say then
you know that you can’t find a better
more intimate couch guitar than this one
I mean it’s really fantastic it’s got
the looks the feel and the sound so take
a listen
well these two guitars shouldn’t be
strangers to anybody particularly if
you’ve been watching our videos these
are part of the FG / FG x-series from
Yamaha and this has been a perennial
favorite since the 70s the F Series
guitars have been in the hands of
multiple musicians on many stages and
have helped a lot of people learn how to
play guitar and find that joy for a
lifetime the guitar series features both
acoustic and acoustic electric models in
two body sizes the FS which is what I
have here on this side is the concert
size Bonnie it’s a small bodied guitar
that is ideal for someone who’s smaller
in stature or who has a lighter touch so
it’s not simply based on your size but
also your style on whether or not you
would pick one or the other if you play
with a light touch finger style guitar
you need more immediate response and
volume without a lot of input and that’s
what a small body guitar like this is
for if you play with a flat pick or you
want more volume out of guitar and
you’re going to put the input needed to
get that volume then you want to look at
a larger dreadknot sized guitar body
like with the FG shape over here now
throughout the FG FG x line you have
laminate back and side construction
paired with a solid top whether that is
a mahogany top or a Sitka spruce top
they now feature scalloped bracing since
a few years ago when it was redesigned
from the 700 to the 800 series guitars
outside of that the differences between
the 800 the 820 the 830 the 850 are
going to be a combination of the woods
use and the aesthetics on it so this
little guy here on this side is an FS
800 it features NATO back insides all
laminate solid Sitka spruce top with
scalloped bracing actually this is an F
820 I realized when I looked up the
binding here on the neck the 800 won’t
have this crisp white binding and the
820 will the 830 which I have here is
rosewood on the back and sides again
solid Sitka spruce top with scalloped
bracing and abalone rosette really
upscale improvement in the aesthetics of
this guitar and then it features because
this is the FGX version a cutaway along
with Yamahas srt under-saddle pickup and
preamp system so it is staged ready and
ready to go so if you’re looking for an
acoustic guitar you can find a just
acoustic guitar from the 800 through the
830 and 850 series on the f-series side
or you can get a cutaway acoustic
electric version of all of those same
guitars as well they’re all fantastic
values with a great acoustic sound and
if you go with the plugged inside it is
a stage ready to go for you whether it’s
in the church or the coffee shop what
have you so really fantastic guitars you
can get an idea of what the two body
shapes provide you here in this demo
so let’s talk about Yamahas a series of
guitars now the a series has a wide
range of prices associated with it
because as you move up the line
you get more features and a different
construction method as well as the
location of where it’s built now it
starts with the a1 series which is what
I have in my lap here we have the AC 1r
and the a1 are these are both rows of
back and side guitars in either a larger
dreadnought sized body which Yamaha call
is a classic western or this smaller
concert sized body the tops on both of
these are solid Sitka Spurs with
scalloped bracing and they feature
throughout the entire a lineup
what Yamaha call is the AR II system
basically it’s a treatment and in the
industry it’s known as Tour faction
basically the tops are treated in such a
way that the guitars are already opened
up as if they’ve been aged for five to
ten years already through playing in
just time so we’ve been able to figure
out how to do this with wood so that
it’s already opened up straight out of
the case for you and it makes for really
a fantastic playing experience on a
brand new guitar it’s broken in so to
speak now as you move up the lineup it
moves from a solid top and laminate back
in sides to all solid construction to
all solid construction with a new pickup
and construction in Japan for the top of
the line a series guitars
whatever you pick throughout this series
you’re going to get a very specific
aesthetic that comes with these from the
finishes to the natural wood bindings
the head stocks and everything is
specific to the series as is the a re
treatment they’ll find on this in the L
Series as well really a fantastic value
on a stage writing guitar these are set
up a little bit differently as well once
you hit a certain level with Yamaha
guitars there’s an addition additional
amount of attention and detail that goes
into them when they are being
constructed and so not only do these
sound better with the treatment that
they’re given as soon as you pick them
up but they play phenomenally they are
really good all-around guitar that’ll
suit
anybody from
Media to professional so and between the
body shapes that you can get again you
can have something that’s a thunderous
low end with crisp articulate highs that
are going to reward the input you give
it from a good solid strum or flat pick
to something that is very versatile with
a strong punchy mid-range and those
sparkling highs that you might need if
you’re going to be finger style playing
with this smaller AC body shape so
really a fantastic series from Yamaha
with the a series and worth checking out
regardless of the price point that
you’re shopping in take a listen
now I know what you’re thinking this
looks just like another FG model in my
lap but it’s actually different and it’s
new for 2018 this is the latest addition
to Yamahas new line of trans acoustic
guitars this is the effigy ta now if
you’re not familiar with the trans
acoustic guitars you should definitely
take a look at the full reviews that
we’ve done on our channel before the
trans acoustic guitar is an acoustic
guitar with onboard built-in effects
that work acoustically now what that
means is that Yamaha has created some
circuitry and an actuator in the guitar
that vibrates or excites the guitar
itself and creates effects without the
need of an amp or anything else so on
the guitar there’s controls for the
pickup system that’s built-in so you can
plug this in as well and play through
any kind of PA system or guitar amp but
there’s also two knobs for reverb both a
room and a hall reverb and chorus and by
turning the system on and turning these
up you can hear through the sound hole
through the guitar itself reverb and
chorus to your heart’s delight it’s
really a fantastic perfect at home or at
the beach guitar particularly now with a
lot of the styles that people are
starting to play that benefit from a lot
of reverb from a lot of these effects
where you can just play at home and and
you can benefit from the on-board
acoustic effects that you get out of
this guitar it’s kind of otherworldly’
and it’s really a fantastic effect that
you get now the trans acoustic line
features both an F G and an FS body
shape so this is the dread-nots sized
body from the FG or the FS they’re solid
tops with laminate back and sides the
trans accused series also features the
same body shapes but in the L Series
which are all solid wood guitars and we
featured those in full review so a
fantastic guitar available now at two
different price points in order to meet
your needs solid wood with a bag or
laminate partial laminate construction
solid top without you you choose bass
upon your budget needs but either way
you’re able to benefit from the kind of
a supernatural type of effect that yama
has been able to deliver here so take a
listen so you can see just how awesome
this is we’re not plugging into an amp
at all this is just acoustic
