Sennheiser XS Wireless 2: XW2-835 vs XSW-835 Microphone Demo

is Sennheiser’s access wireless to
handheld microphone system while it was
announced in 2017 at NAMM it’s still a
pretty unheard of product that
Sennheiser offers my original excess
wireless system has withstood a lot of
abuse including riding in airbags
unprotected 100 degree temperatures and
being handled by countless hands at DJ
gigs sporting events and speeches All
Things Considered it’s held up really
well in terms of build quality but I was
ready to upgrade when I saw the recent
price drop on the new model to two
hundred and fifty dollars so for this
comparison I’ll be plugging the XLR line
out from each receiver directly into the
XLR audio input on my Blackmagic Ursa
mini the volume level on the camera will
be set to 25% and the volume level on
both receivers will be set to max it’s a
studio quality audio input with
professional preamps so while this could
be considered a potential bottleneck on
lesser cameras reality is the impact on
sound quality is negligible especially
after YouTube’s compression so let’s hop
right in and compare the quality between
the XS Wireless one versus the XS
Wireless two all right so this is the XS
Wireless 1 the original access Wireless
that started at all as you can see my
receiver box has seen better days that
thing has been through hundred degree
heat it has ridden in backpacks it’s
gone into gear boxes it’s been just
about to every event that I’ve done and
boy has it blown me away the distance
that this microphone will work from is
absolutely insane it’ll work from 250 to
300 feet without dropouts absolutely an
amazing starter microphone and the exact
reason that I jumped to the XS Wireless
2 without hesitation here’s the
microphone being held at mid chest
height which is usually the height that
people hold a microphone when they don’t
really know how to use a microphone
maybe they really aren’t into public
speaking and they don’t want to have
their voice booming so as you can see
the sound is slightly more thin from
here but it still sounds very prominent
all of those important frequencies are
still there the first thing I want to
demonstrate on the XS Wireless one is
the mute button so I’m gonna push the
mute button while I’m talking just so
you can see what it sounds like when the
microphone is muted check one two check
one one two check one two
here it is with no talking
as you can see it’s a very very quiet
mute switch and the sound of the
microphone being turned off and turned
back on is completely acceptable for DJ
standards this is the on and off switch
intest so we’re gonna switch it off in
the middle of what I’m talking so that
you can hear what it sounds like when
the microphone is switched off while I
I’m going to turn the microphone back on
while I am talking just so that you can
hear what it sounds like when I am
talking and turned the mic on if you
were listening closely you will have
heard that there was a very very slight
just a half a millisecond fade in I’m
going to turn the microphone back on
when you turn the switch on which is
really nice it’s a totally acceptable
sound for the switch being turned on and
off on this microphone so I’m gonna move
the microphone between my hands while
I’m talking and I’m gonna be doing so
very gently just like as if I was
switching hands while during a speech
and you might be able to hear that you
might not be able to hear that
here it is with no talking so what I’m
gonna do is while I’m talking I’m just
gonna sort of trade hands with the
microphone maybe shuffle my hands around
just sort of gently and you can take a
listen to what that sounds like while
I’m talking there’s a little
back-and-forth just to show how much of
that hand noise is picked up by the
microphone now while I’m listening to
this through my headphones there is some
the outside of the microphone is a sort
of a plasticy build it doesn’t not feel
cheap at all it feels very rugged like
it could take a tumble or ten but there
is a little bit of that plasticky sound
to the microphone when you’re handling
it but I really don’t see this being an
issue with DJ events or any of the
private events that I do
the mute switches on both microphones
are acceptable quiet
however the switch on the XS 2 is much
easier for guests to use and understand
in practicality overall the design
changes on the XS 2 are much appreciated
and to my ears the sound quality seems
less staticky and muffled despite being
the same 835 capsule in theory the only
thing I wish they wouldn’t have changed
on the second generation model is that
the original had a really nice rubber
bumper around the mic capsule which was
nice to have when setting the mic down
on a table but this is very very minor
and for the now 250 dollar price tag
upgrade is an easy decision to make
that does it for this video thanks so
much for watching and feel free to take
a look at some of my other DJ product
