Story & Clark Console Piano
hello I’m Megan Larson with Brigham
Larson pianos this story in Clark is a
is a good little instrument that I have
put through rigorous a rigorous
checklist and I’ll play it for you and
I’ll show you what I’ve done to it it’s
it’s it’s in excellent excellent
condition after after all that all that
I’ve done to back story in Clark when
this piano was built which was nineteen
nineteen ninety four was who was still
manufacture in the United States which
for a lot of people is very important
and when this panel came to me which was
six months ago or so it it was in very
similar condition to what I see
regularly in customers homes even though
I have this piano story I’m also still
very regularly in customers homes with
very much a working piano technician but
now it’s it’s like it’s it’s like it’s
brand-new just everything is in great
shape so first thing I do when I get
these panels in my shop because I take
them all out all these keys all of these
come out the action comes out all the
cabinetry comes down a lot further than
this I clean it very thoroughly there’s
there’s generally a layer of dust in
there sometimes so thick you can
actually peel it up that’s that’s any
piano older than you know a decade or so
after I clean it very thoroughly I take
it outside and blow it out like crazy
and I just keep blowing with the with
the air compressor until I can’t get any
more dust which is which is surprising
how long it actually takes and then and
then clean all of the wood with with an
oil a wood oil the action tighten
everything everything there’s several
hundred screws on there all of those
have to be tightened and and all these
bolts around here and in down on the
bottom everything there needs to be
tightened lubricate everything the keys
ensure that they’re perfectly level
ensure that the dip which is the
distance that you can depress them is
the correct amount this distance here
the Hammers to the strings make sure
that’s correct make sure all the pedals
work fix any any issues that that the
pedal might have all the pedals function
correctly and lots of other regulation
procedures ensuring that that that
what’s called the let off the distance
of that hammer pulls away from the
string is just correct which gives you
the right touch among among other things
that checking tested with repetition all
of these things combined give you the
right touch and this this piano
absolutely has it so there’s a there’s a
fairly high standard of about mikanos
that I’m going to put my name on and I
take great pride in in pianos that that
come through my shop and this piano
absolutely after everything that I’ve
done to it absolutely
passes that that high standard let’s
listen to it
1994 has not terribly old by the way for
piano 20 years is hardly anything I
regularly work on pianos that are
significantly older I work on pianos in
the shop and in customers homes that are
from the 80s 70s 60s 50s and you know
they’re still in good shape by the 40s
30s they start to get a little rough but
nonetheless I regularly work on pianos
that are from 1890 to 1930 period where
after after a little bit of work a
little bit of refurbishing they’re great
they’re they’re fabulous instruments
again my point being 20 years is nothing
particularly in light of everything that
I’ve done in this piano
it’s got a great touch
nice time
it’s tuned up to concert pigeon and
tuned it
it’s a great little piano I think I
think it could it could serve a family
very very well for a long long time even
even indefinitely I mean decades this
piano has has has great endurance
there’s no question in my mind I don’t
have any concerns whatsoever about this
piano so thanks for watching
Story and Clark Pianos
The Story & Clark Piano & Organ Company were created by the great pianist/composer, Hampton S. Clark. In 1860 Hampton S. Clark opened his very first music shop in Burlington, Vermont. In 1860 he went to work with a noted piano builder by the name of Powers & built the now famous Story & Clark piano. Since that time the company has gone through many changes including multiple name changes. They are still located in the same building as their old shop.
Most of the pianos manufactured today use digital piano rolls. This is because they produce better results and are easier to store. Digital piano roll players use digital instead of mechanical on and off keys. This provides for a more responsive playing and overall quicker playing. When a player piano is played it makes the music play faster and fluid. The new record piano rolls feature electronic touch-screens, which make them easy to operate.
One of the newest features introduced into Story & Clark player pianos is the Super Cool Swing technology. This technology allows users to easily manipulate the various factors of the keys by utilizing the various buttons on the screen. This gives users more control and capability when playing a specific chord.
Some older pianos that used mechanical keys use an acoustic mirror in their mechanism. The mirror causes the keys to vibrate when struck and produces an impression of the keys’ surface texture. However, because the vibration of each key is different, this method could only be used to determine whether the keys were struck at an equal rate. To solve this problem, the digital piano utilizes an optical sensor.
older player pianos only have two hammers. When you press a third hammer, the hammers strike the keys at the same speed no matter which direction you hit them. With Story & Clark Player Pianos, you can adjust the speed of the hammers precisely, so you can hit each key with the same force each time. For some players, using the more traditional two hammers and three keys is more comfortable and allows for better timing while playing the piano.
While most upright pianos only allow for two, there are models from Story & Clark that allow for regulation of velocity of up to nine octaves. The controls are also very responsive and provide for full mobility while playing. There are many different models of pianos available for sale, depending on the style you want and the amount of money you want to spend. You can find grand pianos as well as player pianos at reasonable prices. Most importantly, though, if you decide to purchase a Story & Clark piano you will not regret your decision.

While the piano itself is not cheap, the price on the Story And Clark upright isn’t too steep, and in my experience, the piano still plays like new. The only real downside to the piano is that it does require some up front commitment to purchase, but once you commit, it is definitely worth it! You have to remember that these were not factory refinished, so expect a little sagging after a few years. And because this is a fairly low cost introduction to the upright range, the company offers a two-year warranty on the whole lot, so you should be able to return it if it doesn’t work as well as you would like.
In summary, I’d recommend the Story And Clark upright piano for anyone looking for a solid easy to play piano that feels like a true mid-century modern piece. If you’d prefer to play it rather quietly (this is fine for folks who only play at home or on their own) or you’d prefer an acoustic piano with a nice finish, then this is a piano for you. However, be sure to check the serial number, as well as the quality of the wood, and be sure to ask about a two-year limited warranty before purchasing.

Unfortunately, all of his pianos came with the serial number missing, which often means that they were all destroyed immediately after being left on the factory floor. Fortunately, however, this doesn’t affect the quality of these pianos. Story And Clark grand piano is still in excellent condition, feels and sounds superb and playing it feels like you’re having a concert in the room! The bench is also a thing of beauty, extremely well balanced and extremely comfortable to sit on.
As for the rest of the piano, it is all in good condition other than the serial number. The glass keys are also in good condition, and the arms on the spinet are also nice and solid.
