Hangout Music Fest Announces 2012 Lineup

The Hangout Music Fest has unveiled its 2012 lineup, revealing that the Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White & The String Cheese Incident will headline the event.

According the festival website, other acts include: The Flaming Lips, Steve Winwood, Skrillex, STS9, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Chris Cornell, Randy Newman, Yelawolf, Mavis Staples, G. Love & Special Sauce, Mac Miller, Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly, Paul Oakenfold, Dr. Dog, Dawes, M. Ward, Coheed & Cambria, Switchfoot, Julian Marley, Cage the Elephant, Zed’s Dead, Sphongle and many mor.

The acts are mostly new to the festival. The Flaming Lips, a group that was among the top acts in 2011, will bring something different this year by playing a set based on Pink Floyd’s classic album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” according to the band’s website.

Overall, the lineup definitely bolsters the Hangout Fest’s reputation for eclecticism. While jam-oriented groups such as the Dave Matthews Band and the String Cheese Incident seem tailor-made for a laid-back beach environment, others such as Coheed & Cambria, Cage the Elephant and Flogging Molly balance that out with plenty of aggressive rock. Electronic dance music is a major component with heavy hitters like Skrillex & Paul Oakenfold securing sets.

Many of the acts are chosen for their appeal to fans with progressive tastes, or for their sheer novelty. The Alabama Shakes, for example, a quartet from Athens, Ala., with a gritty retro-soul sound, have exploded to international fame over the course of the last few months. Yet the inclusion of honored veterans such as Winwood, Newman and Staples lends a depth that goes well beyond current buzz.

The 2012 Hangout Music Fest will take place May 18-20 on the beach at the foot of Ala. 59 in Gulf Shores. Tickets are on sale now at www.hangoutmusicfest.com/tickets. Basic weekend passes will start at $194, eventually rising to $209. VIP passes start at $749, with Super VIP passes going for $1,249. Top-tier “Big Kahuna” tickets, which include access to the artists’ compound and other elite perks, are $2,500.
