How To Use A Lavalier Mic?
Hey everyone, Heen here.
We’ve had a lot of questions from people
asking how to use a lavalier or lapel mic
to get great sound for your videos,
live streams, and conference calls.
So let’s get into it.
A lavalier mic is a small microphone
that you can clip onto clothing.
You will have seen many TV presenters,
vloggers, and filmmakers using them.
They deliver great, clear sound
due to the fact that they can be positioned
quite close to the mouth.
They’re also unobtrusive
and allow complete freedom with your hands.
There are two things to consider
when using a lavalier mic.
The first is how to position it
and the second is how to connect it
to your camera, phone, or laptop.
There are a few different RØDE lavalier mics to choose from.
Each one is designed to work with different devices.
But regardless of what mic you’re using,
they are all clipped and positioned the same way.
As a general rule, you want to position a lavalier mic
on the chest about a handspan distance from the mouth.
This will give you a clear, natural sound.
First, put the microphone into the clip.
We get a lot of questions
about how to attach the mic to the clip.
And while it may seem complicated,
it’s actually very simple.
Just slip the windshield off your mic like so.
Then pinch the spiral clasp
and insert your mic into the loop
to secure the mic in place.
If you’re wearing a jacket, tie, or shirt,
it’s then super easy to position the mic.
Just clip it to the edge
of a suitable piece of clothing like so.
Remember to avoid a position where other clothing
might rub against the mic when you move,
as this will create a distracting sound in your video.
To keep your video looking clean and professional,
you may want to consider concealing the cable.
You can simply tuck it out of sight,
under your jacket, or run it inside your shirt.
Pro sound engineers will use drapers tape
to secure the cable against the inside of clothing.
But another popular choice is gaff tape.
Anything to keep it out of sight.
Here’s another pro tip, the so-called broadcast loop.
This will give you that professional look
you’d have seen on TV.
To do this, run the cable from the mic
through the handle of the clip.
Then complete the circle over the top
and into the slot on the edge of the clip.
Now, when you clip this onto your jacket or your shirt,
you will get that neat, clean profile.
If you’re wearing something smooth like a t-shirt,
you can mount it on the neckline like so.
If you’re wearing a singlet,
the shoulder straps are a great place to mount a mic.
This is often the best solution
if you’re wearing exercise clothing,
or if you want to get creative,
try mounting the mic underneath a headband or a hat.
Regardless of where you position it,
provided the mic is a foot or less from your mouth,
and does not have clothing rubbing against it,
you should get a nice clear sound.
So that’s how you position your mic.
But what about connecting it to your device?
Well, there are a few different things to consider here.
The first is what type of device
you are going to plug it into.
The second is whether you are going to
plug the microphone in directly
or whether a wireless solution is more appropriate.
Let’s look at the device first.
If you are using a phone or a laptop to make your video,
you would need the RØDE smartLav+.
This has the right kind of connector
to plug directly into your device
without the need for an adapter.
If you’re using a computer,
you will need to select external microphone
as the audio input device in your audio settings.
If the smartLav+ is not long enough
to reach your phone or computer,
you can extend it with the RØDE SC1 cable.
This will give you plenty of room
to move back from your camera and still get great sound.
If you’re using a camera like a DSLR,
you’ll need a lavalier mic with a standard audio connector.
The Lavalier GO is a great choice,
as it’s affordable and really easy to use.
If you need more freedom to move around,
using a wireless system is the best option.
We recommend the Wireless GO,
as it’s compact, affordable, sounds amazing,
and is really easy to use.
Setting this up is very simple.
Slot the receiver, that’s this one, onto your camera
and plug it into the audio input.
Then clip the transmitter, that’s this one,
which has an inbuilt lavalier mic to your chest.
If you’d prefer to use an external lavalier mic
to plug into the Wireless GO transmitter,
use the Lavalier GO, rather than the smartLav+,
as this has the correct connector.
The two different connectors do look very similar.
But an easy hint with RØDE products
is just to look at the colour of the connector.
Grey connectors are for mobile devices
and black is for regular audio and camera equipment.
If you want to use the Wireless GO
with a laptop or mobile device,
this is very easy, but you will need a different cable.
We’ve made another video about how to do this.
Check it out in the link below.
I always wanna do this.
A final tip.
When using a lavalier outdoors or close to your mouth,
it’s important to use the supplied windshield
to reduce wind noise or plosives.
All RØDE lavalier mics include a form of wind protection,
so we’ve got you covered.
Thanks for watching, guys!

Clip-On Microphone Review
A clip-on microphone is a device that is designed to be used in conjunction with telephones. These devices have a microphone built into them and they can be clipped onto the end of a telephone cord or on a special clip that fits over the receiver of the phone. This makes it possible for the user to communicate without having to hold the telephone receiver all the time. This feature has been very useful to people who want to communicate using only one hand, but it is also useful for people who need to carry other items with them such as a walkie talkie or other equipment.
Clip-on microphones are usually used for outdoors activities because they are waterproof and usually have some sort of carrying device. When you are out in nature, you will likely want to use your hands most of the time, so you will want something that you can easily carry and attach to your clothing or to a backpack. A traditional microphone will work for most situations, but you might want something a little more versatile if the situation calls for it. A lavalier microphone will work great in this case. Many phones come equipped with clips, so there is really no need to purchase separate devices. If you have a Sony Ericsson mobile phone, for example, it is very easy to find clip-on microphones that you can attach to your phone.
It is a good idea to get a clip-on microphone even if you do not normally use your hands when you are speaking to others. The reason why you would want one of these products is that they give you the ability to be able to speak with ease and your audience will be able to hear your voice clearly. You can use your hands free for many different reasons, but sometimes using your hands frees up your vocal cords to do other things. With a lavalier microphone you can still use your hands to convey your message. Your audience will thank you for taking the time to speak whether or not they hear your voice.
The benefit of a clip-on microphone is that it has the sound recording quality that you would expect from a professional microphone. It does not matter whether you are speaking in front of the mirror or in front of a group of people. The sound will be professional and the volume will not be lost. Because it is digital, you can adjust the volume without having to remove your hands from the microphone. If you need to make any adjustments to the sound, all you need to do is press a button on the remote control. It is that simple and easy to operate.
The final benefit of a clip-on microphone is that they are convenient to carry. Whether you are going to be out and about or you are just running down the street to pick up your coffee, you will never have to worry about losing your lavalier microphone again. You can simply put it in your pocket and carry it around in plain sight. Some people carry it in their briefcase. Others even keep one in their wallet.
These are just a few of the benefits of owning a clip-on microphone. They are convenient and cost effective. They also do not compromise on quality. You can use them anytime and anywhere. So, why not invest in a lavalier microphone today?
Clip-On Microphones Buyer’s Guide
Wireless Lavalier Microphone is a popular item of equipment amongst performers and the general public. Lightweight and portable, lavaliers are typically the go-to microphone for performing art theatre and public speaking, and can be the perfect addition to any performer’s set. Their small size means that performers can place them just about anywhere, in a number of positions that allow them to cover larger areas with ease. They’re also great for people who do a lot of stage performances, because they don’t require the space that other forms of amplification require. Another great benefit of wireless lavalier microphone is that they can be used without having wires, so performers can move around easily and perform from wherever they want to.
Because of their light weight, most wireless lavalier microphone systems don’t require any cables. They’re perfect for stage performers who might travel a lot and need to bring along a simple recording device that can capture their performance. This eliminates the need to bring an extra recording device or carry a bulky wired microphone with them on set. Wireless microphones have a number of different options when it comes to the transmission and reception of their signal. Some transmit their signal via rechargeable batteries, while others will use rechargeable batteries exclusively. There are also models available that have both functions, so that performers can choose to either use their microphones on a battery basis or transmit their signal.
There are a wide variety of different wireless lavalier microphone models to choose from, and depending on your budget, you can buy a transmitter and microphone that will serve your purposes perfectly. When choosing a transmitter and microphone combination, however, you need to choose the best audio quality first. As a general rule, the audio quality of a radio or mp3 player is better than that of a microphone. Wireless microphones will allow you to move freely and perform, but they won’t do you any good if you pick the wrong model. With wireless lavalier microphone systems, you can pick the best audio quality and still get the performance that you want, whether you’re a professional on stage or someone who just wants to provide some sound input at home. The best audio transfer devices for any given situation are those that provide the best sound for the price, so be sure to take that into consideration.
A lot of gamers love the ability to plug in their headphones and microphones, turn on the computer, and have all of their voices come through clearly. This not only makes them more audible, but also allows them to move around more freely within the game environment. They can also communicate with other players more easily through headsets than they could without a mic and be able to hear everything around them. It’s important to be able to hear your teammates when they’re communicating with each other through chat rooms and live web casts, but most importantly, communication within the game itself is enhanced. Headset mic makes this a much easier process.
The most common application for a clip-on microphone for gaming is as a voice recording device. This means that a player can plug in their headphones or microphone, turn on the computer, and begin playing without having to take their hands off of the controller or playing any other games. Once the player’s character is in-game, they can move their character with the click of a button and hear what sounds like their character talking at their side. Some good examples of games where this would be helpful include shooters, first-person role-playing games, RPG’s, as well as MMORPGs.
Another popular use is as a simple headset mic for podcasting. Clip-ons can be used in this application because the person doesn’t need a separate microphone for streaming. Instead, the user simply needs to plug in their headset and click “Record” to begin streaming. They can then select which types of files they want to record, and voila – they have a podcast! A headset microphone for gaming and podcasting offers a great solution for those that may be recording while playing a game or doing other activities, but wish to have the background noise canceling ability that a normal headset cannot offer.
Clip-on microphones are becoming more popular these days, both as a recording instrument and as part of the overall studio setup. With the exception of the condenser microphone, which is used on recordings where the sound is very loud or echoes are obvious, most engineers will prefer a cardioid microphone with an additional cardioid pickup that also has a diaphragm. This way they can achieve a more refined quality sound during recording. Some professional audio professionals may like a much smoother, refined sound, however. The benefit of having a microphone that has a diaphragm attached that allows a better quality recording is worth the extra money.
There are many types of microphones that can be used during a recording. When you have decided to use a clip-on mic for filming, it’s important that you know what your choices are before you go shopping. You need to make sure that your budget fits within the range of the product that you’re going to purchase. If you’re looking to record music, there are many options available that can be used in conjunction with professional recording equipment. These options include a compressor, limiter, and a mixer.
If you’re planning on recording interviews, seminars, conferences, meetings, or live performances, a simple headset mic will be perfect for the job. For microphones that are used on stage, sound engineering mikes are available so that you can get the performance that you desire. For the best results, try using a cardioid microphone for recording that is lightweight and/or wireless. If you’re recording from more than one location, then an added microphone for each location would be useful.
There are so many factors that you have to take into consideration when deciding on the best possible microphone for your application – I’ll highlight them in this article. Let’s start with an understanding of how a normal microphone works. The light waves incident on the surface of the diaphragm trigger its vibration causing the frequency response of the diaphragm to change, which is then picked up by the microphone. This in turn produces a natural sound, usually of a high quality.
The problem with most instruments is their inability to reproduce the exact frequency response of a human voice, which results in a ‘tinny’ or sometimes ‘clipped’ sound. One way around this is to use ‘phantom power’ to increase the overall strength of the signal being captured. Modern miniature instrument microphones utilise what is called a ‘phantom power amplification device’. This basically means that the actual microphone doesn’t use the diaphragm to generate the actual sound it responds to, but rather relies on a transformer to achieve this instead. This permits the exact frequency response of the instrument to be recreated, without any loss of quality.
The next criteria that you have to take into account are: the diaphragm’s ability to capture the desired signal and its resulting phase response. Most modern instruments utilise a paper diaphragm but if you want true fidelity, you’re going to want to go with a specially designed paper microphone. When assessing which type of clip-on guitar microphone is best suited for your application, the tone of the instrument and the overall ambience must be taken into account. Different musical styles will require different microphone types and so will the tonal qualities. However, a good idea is to go for a general purpose clip-on guitar microphone with a cardioid pattern so that you can capture both bass and treble frequencies.
A USB Clip-on Microphone is one of the latest accessories released by Creative Labs, a UK based company. The Microphone can be used with many different devices that are designed to be used on the go. This makes it very convenient for people that are always on the go and are always away from a PC or laptop for any reason. The USB microphone clip-on is especially great for people who have their own recording studio and want to take their instrument out to a gig or even use the device while away from home on holiday.
The USB microphone clip-on comes with a USB charging cable, which means that once you plug the device into your computer, it will immediately charge. The charging port also works with several other devices such as game consoles, digital cameras, and cell phones. There are also headphones provided with the device, which means that no external noise is picked up by the audio device when in use. This is an excellent feature especially if you work in an environment that has a lot of background noise.
It is easy to attach the USB clip-on microphone to your bag, shirt or even wallet. This also means that you do not have to carry around a heavy device when you are working, which can cause discomfort. Another benefit of the device is that it is portable. It can be used in a car, on stage or anywhere else that requires a recording device. If you need to have a constant phone call then the device can be attached to your pocket or shirt and you can continue to record without having to stop your work.
The Sony Clip-On Microphone is a professional audio device that delivers crystal clear sound for practicing on stage. The instrument also has several additional features including a THX preamp, an optical input, two ways to change the level of the sound as it’s recorded and even an auto shut off function for when you’re finished. This article will give you more information on this amazing new addition to your bag!
The Sony Clip-On Microphone is small in size compared to many other devices on the market. It can fit in your pocket or purse and be used anywhere without the need to carry extra equipment. I’ll tell you why I love this product so much – It’s so simple to use and operate! The controls are extremely easy to use with a foot pedal and a trigger button on the front of the unit. When using the preamp attachment, simply place the foot pedal wherever you like on the fretboard and begin playing. This is really great for those practicing live because they can perform in the comfort of their own home without having to worry about disturbing anyone else in the vicinity.
The preamp attachment has a built in noise gate which limits the amount of feedback that it receives. This is important because it prevents the sound from being overly amplified. The THX preamp included with the Sony Audio Video Multimedia Interface is considered to be one of the best on the market and it performs extremely well. I highly recommend this device if you are looking for a solid cardioid (point-and-shoot) microphone as well as the ability to record high-quality music and movies. If you’re looking for a cardioid microphone with a flat response time that you can control via the onboard sound adjustment knobs then the THX Professional Digital Multimedia Interface with Piezo Noise Gate is the one for you.
