bass today and this is an acoustic bass. The acoustic bass is kind of a mix between an
electric bass and an acoustic guitar. It’s like an electric bass because it’s still held
in the same way, it’s not an upright bass. So it’s held in the same way as a guitar or
an electric bass is. And also it’s played like an electric bass where you play with
your first two fingers here. Except for instead of resting your fingers on a pickup, or your
thumb rather, on a pickup, you’re going to rest your thumb either on the top string here
and just play like that. Or you’re going to rest it up against the body. Or you’re just
going to float out and out there and just hit it with the two fingers. You can also
play with a pick or with your fingers or however is comfortable for you. Now, the way that
it’s like an acoustic guitar is the way that it makes sound. ‘Cause where on electric bass
it makes sound based off the pickups, the magnetic pickups that pick up the sound, where
an acoustic guitar or an acoustic bass the string vibrates, goes down through the sound
hole, the sound bounces off the back and the sides of the instrument and it vibrates the
top of the instrument. And so it projects the sound that way. Completely different,
although there is also a preamp on most acoustic basses where you can plug it in and make an

Given the price, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this instrument. I’m a guitarist who has only played a few electric basses in the past; I bought this to use for adding bass tracks to recordings; it fits well through a DI box into my mixer and recorded cleanly with a good full bottom using Audacity.
Acoustically, it’s very quiet, so it’s perfect for playing at home; I’m not sure if it will jam with a dreadnought acoustic guitar without an amp. The sound is woody, similar to that of a stand-up bass, but lacks the scope of an upright.
Overall, it’s a good instrument for the money. In terms of action, mine came pretty well set up. I’ve never seen open pore mahogany on a guitar before, but it has a good look and feel to it. I will suggest this to someone looking for a practice or learning instrument, or for group sessions when amplified.
I’ll start by admitting that I’m a huge Fender fan. I already own a few Fender guitars, so when I saw this one, I did some research and decided to purchase it as my regular player.
It is a laminate construction, but laminates have improved over the years, and since I live in an environment that is very dry most of the time and very wet the rest of the time, I like the idea of a guitar that will not be affected by drastic humidity changes.
I received the guitar about a month ago, and my first impressions are that it is really good for such a low price.
The maple pattern is very different from the photo, which I suppose is to be expected, but it is quite nice looking, if not exactly what I was expecting. The supplied strings were very tinny, so I replaced them almost immediately. I also bought “Martin Authentic Acoustic Guitar Strings – Lifespan 2.0 Treated”, and the difference was incredible. A much fuller, richer sound, as well as a smoother playing experience.
Overall, I’m satisfied with my purchase. I only gave it four stars because of the unusual pattern of the wood, which was not as good as the one in the picture, and the complete garbage strings. I will recommend it because it plays well and I will buy it again.
I agree with the other reviewers that there is a lot of string buzz unless you play very lightly. However, the action is strong, and the sound, both amplified and acoustic, is very good for the price. This is a fun instrument that is also surprisingly well built. I did have two chips in the finish right out of the box. I contacted Dean to see if they had any “touch up” finishes for it; Dean did not respond to their email address for help, so I called them, and they told me over the phone that they recommended I go to Home Depot and buy some stain/finish there to repair it. The finish had a lot of rough overspray in some places, but that was to be expected given the low cost.
